Emergency Drawbridge Repairs – MA District 5 Operations

Project Overview

This project included scheduled and emergency maintenance and operation of eight (8) MassDOT-owned drawbridges at various locations within District 5. The types of maintenance repairs ranged from structural steel, reinforced concrete, mechanical and electrical repairs to the bridge bascule piers, control house, bridge decks, sidewalks, fender systems, machinery room, navigation lights, permanent lights, warning & barrier gates, and utilities. The scope also included routine cleaning, lubrication, and inspection of the bridge machinery and mechanical components.

SPS services performed included: 24/7 Bridge Operation; Daily & On-Call bridge maintenance and operation; Bridge operation troubleshooting and repair; Upgrading of electrical CCTV systems; Upgrading of advanced warning bridge notification sign communication system; and Replacement of bridge warning and barrier gates. 

The types of drawbridges repaired included single leaf bascule style, double leaf bascule style, and a swing truss bridge.
