Conley Terminal Freight Corridor Buffer Open Space (Phase 2)

Project Overview

The purpose of this project was to create a dedicated freight corridor that removes container trucks serving Conley Terminal from residential streets, and to improve the operational efficiency of the terminal and the economic strength of the Port of Boston.

The SPS Team constructed: Approximately 3,300 sq. ft. of paved industrial roadway in an urban setting; A new marine bridge on steel pipe piles over an inlet of the Boston Harbor Reserved Channel; A new entry/exit area for trucks to access the container terminal; A new 4.5 acre public open space (buffer) – Thomas J. Butler Memorial Park; A new signalized intersection with Summer Street; and A new 2,000-ft. secure pedestrian walkway and modifications to the curb, roadway, fencing and security infrastructure at the existing Conley Terminal entrance.

SPS’s work was recognized at the ribbon-cutting ceremony and dedication of the Thomas J. Butler Memorial Park, an event at which Governor Baker and other Boston officials honored Mr. Butler’s efforts as South Boston native and long-time Director of External Affairs at the Massachusetts Port Authority (Massport).
