Bridge Replacement Rte. 2 over Rte. 140
Project Overview
Project Overview:
This project replaced Route 2 eastbound and westbound bridges over route 140 with three span steel stringer bridges. In the process, 1,047 ft of eastbound approach roadway and 1,099 ft of westbound approach roadway were constructed along with 4,019 ft of crossover roadway. This was all done via an accelerated bridge project, for which SPS successfully met project goals and deadlines.
Key Challenges Overcome:
Unique to this project are two distinctive ground improvement techniques, Stone Columns and Compaction Grout Columns. The work, consisting of approximately 900 separate, 30 feet deep columns installed over an acre of land, will treat the ground under and adjacent to the proposed bridges.
Interesting Facts / Figures
Setting this project apart from many others is the Value Engineering Change Proposal (VECP) which SPS worked closely with MassDOT to develop in the early stages of the project. The VECP modified the original scope of work, reducing the 4 Phase construction sequence to 3 Phases, saving the State both time and money.
On November 18, 2011, the SPS Westminster Project Team completed two significant goals, in the push to complete the $11 Million, double bridge replacement on Route 2, at least 1 year ahead of the anticipated project schedule.
